Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
